DISCOVER YOUR STYLE – MAKEUP OVER-40

Through The Years

Are you a woman over-40 who is starting to feel “old” when you see makeup ads on social media, in magazines, etc. (does anyone read those anymore?…)

Do you see styles coming back that you wore in high school and beyond, and you think, “I loved that style back then, but I don’t know if it would look so good on me now?” And what’s that saying about “if you wore it when it was popular the first time around, you probably shouldn’t be wearing it now?”

The image at the left is of me through the years from my late teenage years to the present. My own style has changed over the years, and I would feel silly wearing what I wore in high school, just as I would feel silly wearing what the current eye makeup trends are. No matter what age we are we want to look our best, and I would like to teach you the principles widely used in the beauty industry to apply your makeup to be uniquely you and not to look like everyone else.

I will be launching DISCOVER YOUR STYLE,  an online teaching platform geared to the Over-40 crowd, offering classes to discover what is unique about you, what works for you with your makeup, your wardrobe, and the decorating style that makes you comfortable in your home.

Ninety-percent of what you see advertised, as far as makeup goes, caters to the 15-30-something woman. There is not much that caters to middle-aged women and older. Why do you think that is? We are still relevant and are still discovering new things about ourselves,

Makeup styles come and go, and most video tutorials that I see are more about how to do makeup for the current trend and are less about enhancing someone’s natural features or personalizing it to them. It’s sort of a “one size fits all” mentality.

I want to teach women how to apply makeup based on their specific and unique features to enhance what they have and minimize what they don’t like. You can still incorporate some of the current trends in colors, if desired, but learning makeup application designed specifically for you will carry you beyond any trends.

And let me say that the principles I teach are universal to any age group, and all are welcome.

Stay informed about the 1st installment on makeup over-40, which will be ready for launch in early Autumn. As a Pre-Launch, I’m offering a FREE mini-course on Eyebrow Shaping and also Pre-Launch Discount pricing for the makeup course.

LIP TRENDS SUMMER 2021

MAKEUP OVER-40

Makeup Over 40

Ladies over 40 – are you still wearing makeup the same way you wore it in high school? As I observe and talk to women over 40, they don’t want to follow the current makeup trends, which seem to cater to teens and 20-somethings. So what they tend to do is stick with the way they wore their makeup in high school, since it seemed to work for them at the time, life was carefree, everything was good, no worries, so why fix it if it isn’t broken, right?

Current trends are so garish and outlandish that unless you are going out clubbing or are a high-fashion model doing a layout for a magazine ad for cosmetics, this type of look might be fun for the younger set, but it really isn’t the best look for those of us over 40. So if that is the current trend, you might be asking yourself, “Then where do I go to learn how to do what looks good on me?”

Enter the “Discover Your Style: Stylized Makeup” course! We are all different. Different bone structure, different facial features, etc. I’m launching my “Discover Your Style” courses in early 2021, starting with stylized makeup application.

We’ll be covering all of the following, but feel free to give your suggestions, as I’d like to know what types of things you would be interested in learning.

  • Eyebrows
  • Contouring & Highlighting
  • Eye Makeup
  • Lip Makeup

3-STEP CLEANSING

When it comes to a skincare routine, let’s KEEP IT SIMPLE.

A twice-daily skin care routine doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. I’ve talked in other posts about the importance of cleansing your skin properly before applying makeup. And it goes without saying that cleansing makeup from your skin before bedtime is also essential to keep your pores unclogged. But it’s just as important to cleanse your skin even if you’re not wearing makeup.

Think these three steps: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize

Not cleansing your skin can lead to clogged pores and acne, oiliness, dullness, and dirt. But after cleansing and rinsing, you can see an immediate difference in the brightness of your skin and the resulting radiant glow.

A mild toner without alcohol content is the next step to remove excess traces of makeup or cleanser, refreshes your complexion, and sweeps away dull skin.

Slather on the moisturizer for your third step. Fight those wrinkles! Combat dryness from wind and too much sun! Replenish and plump up your skin with moisture! And if you’re someone who spends a lot of time outdoors participating in sports or just being in nature, or lives in a hot, sunny climate, wearing sunscreen is very important. Whether choosing a foundation that has sunscreen in its formula, or wearing a sunscreen by itself, the SPF should be at least 30.

TIP: Our hands and our neck are very age-revealing, so slather sunscreen there as well.

If you’re over 40, some ingredients to look for are hyaluronic acid, probiotics, ceramides, and anything plant-based.

Some of us who are a bit more high-maintenance might want to go beyond the 3-step process, and that’s okay. An additional step once per week would be a facial mask or exfoliating product to remove dead skin cells for a deeper cleansing. This should definitely be added to your regimen as you age, particularly after menopause (there it is – the “M” word…) because you will find that even if your skin was previously oily, it will get drier after menopause because of the change in the production of hormones.

There you have it! One, two, three. Keep it simple.

CLEANSING YOUR FACE

Skincare

It’s important to have a radiant, clean face before applying makeup. A clean face makes your makeup application much smoother. Tula Purifying Face Cleanser will leave your skin with a healthy glow without stripping it of essential moisture. The probiotics in the Tula Purifying Face Cleanser make it a great choice for all skin types and particularly for those who have acne-prone and sensitive skin . It has a fresh, clean scent without being overpowering. Just a small amount works into a foam, leaving your skin fresh and glowing.

As a general rule before starting ANY new skincare routine, it’s important to remember that sometimes your skin will get worse before it gets better, especially if you are prone to acne. Acne lesions may already have formed on the skin, and those cells regenerate quickly, clogging your pores, which makes it sometimes difficult to “keep up” before you will see a difference once starting a new skincare routine. It can take about a month or two for cell turnover. I know it’s tempting to pop your blemishes, but that can make the problem worse, causing additional irritation and causing possible scarring of the skin. If you need additional help speeding up the purge process, you might need a deep cleansing mask or deeper treatments from an esthetician. Also be mindful of what you put INTO your body, as that also affects the appearance of our skin.

Just be patient when starting a new skincare routine.

A good product will take care of The Big Three –

  • Exfoliation of dead skin cells
  • Minimization of bacteria
  • Balance the production of sebum, fatty matter in the skin

If there is a slight elevation in skin irritation, don’t give up! Stick with your new routine for at least 30 days. Evaluate your skin after the “purge” period – about two months – and see if there’s any noticeable difference, such as softer, less oily skin, fewer or smaller blemishes, less redness, etc. If so, continue with your new routine and replenish your products as needed for the best long-term effect. Happy Cleansing!

DON’T DRY OUT!

Do you ever feel like your face is a desert? Dried out and devoid of moisture? Moisturizer’s benefits don’t end at just hydrating your skin. There are other benefits, as well. Other than the obvious benefit of fighting wrinkles, a moisturizer can protect against the effects of climate, replenish your skin to help repair itself with the daily loss of skin cells, and can alleviate many other skin problems.

Moisturizers with antioxidants can stimulate collagen production to keep your skin looking young. But the discipline is to START using a moisturizer when you’re young. When skin dries out due to weather or your own skin type, it will get inflamed from the collagen breakdown without enough hydration. With collagen reduction comes wrinkles. Now, you can’t totally escape the wrinkles that come with aging, but regular use of a moisturizer will minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

When we think about the effects of climate on our skin, I think most people think Winter climates are the harshest because of how drying wind and cold weather can be. The scorching Summers in the Southwest and in desert climates can be just as damaging because of the drying effects of the sun and due to the low humidity in the air. Wearing moisturizer in all climates will help the skin’s protective layer battle against pollution and other irritants.

Tula’s Hydrating Day & Nite Cream is lightweight and non-greasy and is the perfect moisturizer to carry you from day-to-night. It’s great for all skin types and will leave your skin looking nourished, hydrated, and healthy. In addition to hydrating and maintaining skin balance, peptides will keep your skin looking firm and evening out the tone of your skin. The probiotics will help calm the look of irritated skin.

So whether you’re young or old, male or female, no matter your skin type or in what type of climate you live, using a moisturizer is a good idea. Your skin will thank you.

Beautiful Skin Starts from the Inside-Out

I love using skin care products that contain natural ingredients, and TULA Skincare definitely fits the bill. For years we have been a society who has believed all the magazine and TV ads because of a product’s strong marketing campaign and the attractiveness of the model used in the ads. Realistically, most of us don’t look like those young models – even when we were their age! If we saw something that appealed to us in a promotion, we went out and bought it without thinking much about the ingredients. We just weren’t educated to look at labels on things for which we spent our hard-earned money, whether it was grocery items, cleaning products, or skincare and makeup that we wore on our faces every day.

One of the great things since the inception of the Internet is that there is SO much information out there for us to explore and multiple reliable sources from whom we can get that information. There are also websites that promote consumer reviews to inform others of their experiences using certain products, telling us their opinions of the pros and cons. With all of this information available to us, we can form an educated opinion about what makes sense for us to buy.

Good skin comes not only from what you put on your skin from the outside but also comes from what we ingest into our body in the form of health food and nutrition. Heredity also plays a part, so if you’re lucky enough to have had a mother or grandmother who had beautiful skin, chances are that you will, too. It’s important to embrace who we are and love ourselves, even if we don’t look like what beauty ads say we should. Our attitude about ourselves also factors significantly in our confidence level.

I want to tell you about TULA Skincare. It was created by Dr. Roshini Raj under the concept that the science behind a healthy internal system can also be beneficial to our skin when similar products such as probiotics and superfoods are used as ingredients. TULA is different because it leaves out all the bad ingredients and uses what’s good while being cruelty-free in creating its formulations.

Bad stuff being: Formaldehyde, mineral oil, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petrolatum, and more.

GOOD STUFF being: Plant-based products, microbes, organics, and natural compounds, like aloe, turmeric, ginger, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycolic acid, apple, papaya, probiotics, and more. The good stuff also SMELLS GOOD and doesn’t rely on perfumes added.

TULA’S complete line of skin care products appeals to all skin types and can be purchased individually, in skin care kits with a group of products most used together, or in a travel sized kit with a convenient cosmetic bag to store items together. (Click on images for pricing)

Skin Care Essentials

If you’re the soap and water type, or if you’re using products that don’t quite seem like they’re working for you, it can be a bit intimidating to know which products to use when you’re beginning a skin care routine or looking to switch to a different product line. The TULA Skin Care Line is extensive; they sell products either individually or packaged together in a beauty kit. It makes sense to start with a beauty kit that comes with multiple products, so you can try them out at a price that would be less expensive than had you purchased them separately.

TULA’s Skin Care Essentials Routine Kit comes with five best-selling FULL-SIZE products that come in a handy cosmetic bag (bags may vary when purchased).

Cult-Classic Purifying Face Cleanser refreshes and conditions your skin as it removes makeup and impurities. It’s rich in antioxidants and locks in moisture.

Face Filter Blurring & Moisturizing Primer can be used as a primer under foundation, as it smooths uneven skin tones creating the look of glowing, sun-kissed skin. Because it leaves the texture of skin so smooth, it can be used by itself for days when you want to give your skin a rest and go makeup-free.

24-7 Moisture Hydrating Day & Night Cream is a perfect deep-hydration cream for use both under makeup and as part of your nighttime cleansing. It firms the skin and leaves it glowing. Rich in probiotics, Rice Nutripeptides, and fruit extracts. (Click on image for pricing)

Glow & Get It Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm comes in a handy little stick that’s perfect to keep in your purse for a quick pick-me-up during the day. Eyes can begin to look tired if you’re sitting behind a computer all day. This balm hydrates and cools while filling in the fine lines around your eyes.

So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub is a gentle facial scrub that exfoliates without stripping the skin. Papaya and Pineapple fruit extracts and sugar smell heavenly and will make you feel like you’re at the beach and will soften and renew your skin. As we age our skin can tend to have a dull appearance over time, and it’s important to slough off those dead skin cells that accumulate about once weekly. (Click on images for pricing)

This is a good start to any skin care beauty routine. I will review new products monthly; there may be products you will want to add or substitute to your daily cleansing.

SKIN CARE FOR GUYS

Skin care isn’t just for the ladies. Guys, your skin needs care, too.

Shaving every day can do a number on your skin. Tula’s So Polished Exfoliating Sugar Scrub can help soothe breakouts and razor burn from too much shaving. I know the trend of late – even pre-pandemic – has been for guys to grow beards.

Nothing wrong with a little facial hair, but there IS skin under that hair, so it’s a good routine to have. Even David Beckham does it!

It’s not harsh and works great on sensitive skin. And it smells so good, you’ll want to taste it! The ingredient of pineapple is a natural enzyme promoting your skin’s radiance. The other natural ingredients of sugar and papaya exfoliate the dead layers of skin, removing that dullness to let the radiance shine through. Probiotics keep balance and hydrate.

A Limited Edition sugar scrub is available for the Fall Season that was made in collaboration with former Olympian gymnast Shawn Johnson East. Pumpkin is substituted for the pineapple, leaving your skin soft and pliable. Fruit enzymes help to unclog the pores.

Be sure to moisturize after exfoliating with Tula’s Hydrating Day and Night Crème.
