Since April showers bring May flowers, is everyone busy planting flowers or flowerpots for your gardens? I don’t know about you, but I don’t have much of a green thumb. And I live in an area filled with wildlife that destroy plants, so I’m relegated to just a few small pots on my patio and enjoying the natural landscape of my Southwestern city.
In May we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. But did you know there are lots of other observations in May? Among the more fun ones are:
- Kite Day (May 3rd)
- Eat What You Want Day (May 11th)
- Limerick Day (May 12th)
- Blame Someone Else Day (the 1st Friday the 13th of the year)
- World Laughter Day (1st Sunday of May)

I love these! Just think, if we incorporated things like this into our lives, EVERY day could be World Laughter Day! And we could all use more laughter in our lives.
This past year has been hard on people all over the world. I know some of you have experienced loss in your lives – whether it was something indicative of Covid, such as a financial or job loss, experiencing sadness or depression due to isolation and not being able to travel or see your loved ones, or perhaps unrelated, such as the loss of a parent or an unrelated health issue.
I’ve experienced a few of these myself, but as I like to say that relationships are the most important thing, not being able to travel to see family, attend my weekly church group or service, or have in-person community with friends has been the hardest. Just as I had decided that I was going to attend more live concerts and enjoy the music or have friends over for more board-game nights, things changed.
Upon reflection, there were a few necessary lessons learned that might not have happened had I made different life decisions that were not based on the circumstances or had I not had the time those circumstances provided to really ponder things, be grateful for each day’s provision, and decide what I wanted my life to look like moving forward. It’s time to stop living in fear and to start living again, although things might look a bit different for a while. But however that looks it will include relationships and community with others.
I have learned to appreciate what I have, to be grateful for anything extra, and to cast off the things and people that don’t serve my life in a positive way.
